celebrity edge to them. Tom Cruise, a well-
known devotee of motorcycling, starred in
the film Mission Impossible II, and in that
rode a Speed Triple and a T595 Daytona…
and rode them himself. Then there was
the Thruxton he rode in the film Edge of
Tomorrow. No stunt riders required, and
whatever you may think of the chap he
can certainly ride. And yep, he’s got a fine
collection to choose from when the weather’s
fine in Los Angeles, or Colorado, or Florida or
London… where he has homes.
Two well established big names on the
landscape of motorcycling are Ewan
McGregor and Richard Hammond; the latter
best known for his exploits on four wheels
Hammond started riding when he was a
teenage lad of 16 and, like Grylls, worked
up through the capacity ranks taking on
Kawasaki 600s, Honda 750s and 1000s and
Ducatis and… pretty much everything. Today
he has a huge collection of bikes, including a
1927 Sunbeam.
And Ewan? He’s ridden many thousands of
klicks alongside chum Charley Boorman and
unrolled those rides in the docos’ Long Way
Round and Long Way Down. He is devoted
to adventure riding and is also a big fan of
classic machinery. But Triumph doesn’t have
him for he is, I understand, a Moto Guzzi
brand ambassador.
Another celeb’ to take to the screen and
roads aboard bikes is John Travolta, who has
long enjoyed riding Harley-Davidsons, which
fitted in nicely with the film Wild Hogs. Like
Hammond, he got the bike bug as a teenager
and once said he had no hesitation using a
bike to get around Hollywood when he began
his acting career as it was the easiest and
cheapest way to get around. He’s got a few
cruisers in the garage these days.
Who else has got a bike or three in the
garage? Well, there is a two-wheeled celebrity
land army of them. Ryan Gosling has some
and Brad Pitt’s got some… and the list goes
on and on.
Yessiree… the bike bug bites more than we
sometimes realise.
