I s the 2020 Honda CB500X the best mid-sized Touring/Commuter/Adventure road bike on the market today? That’s a broad spectrum for any bike to cover, but to answer, without trying to be too much of a fence sitter, I’d have to say Honda has given it a bloody good nudge. And since the last time we tested the CB500X in 2017, the price has come down by $300 – not to be sniffed at, especially when most things are getting more expensive. But back to the start… is it the best? Well, of course, the ‘best’ bike in any category is totally subjective. Purchases are made for lots of reasons and not always the most logical ones. Passions are at stake, brand loyalty, the bike’s character and personal preference can lead to the odd irrational decision. I mean, I’m sure someone, somewhere, commutes on Goldwing… and while it’s a hell of a bike, perhaps not the most sensible choice for lane spitting, but good on them. So, getting back to the CB500X, let’s tick some boxes. First up, it’s a Honda, so is well made with great attention to detail. It’s also good looking in a highly functional way. It’s very comfortable with a commanding riding position offering a great, up- right view ahead and one that puts little weight on arms/wrists – perfect for long hours in the saddle. Your knees are at a relatively relaxed bend from sensibly placed footpegs that are neither too high or too far back, but still offer plenty of ground clearance. Weather protection is okay from a tall screen that works well, however efficient hand guards would be a nice addition for the winter months. The ergonomics will be suitable for almost all sizes – the Honda is not too big or small and not too heavy at under 200kg fully fuelled. KIWI RIDER 55
