Ken Campbell 1912 Indian 8-valve in 1998
The first paragraph in the 1980 programme
said, ‘Foremost in establishing a Racing
Register was a genuine desire to hold onto
something never to be repeated. Perhaps
nostalgia, or unashamedly a love of those fine
machines of the past’.
It all began in August 1979. A working
committee had been elected, and the
NZCMRR was established to foster an interest
in pre-1963 motorcycles. Office holders
were Hugh Anderson (co-ordinator), Errol
McCabe (Chairman), Sid Doherty (Treasurer),
Jean Southern (Secretary), and a general
committee consisting of Jack Barrett, Ron
Berry, Les Callis, John Farnsworth, Steve
Glading, Robin Heavey, Graham Ross, John
Ruff, John Samson, Tim Parker, and Barry
Williams. A technical sub-committee was
formed for the first race meeting consisting
of Pete Butterworth, John Jones, and Ernie
William. The official starter was Trevor Rose,
and the club steward D. Price. The souvenir
programme was in the hands of Murray Greig.
The 1980 programme also featured a parade
of some of the greats of yesteryear; John
Dale, Bill White, Gavin Dunlop, Peter Pawson,
Peter Murphy Jim Swarbrick, Sid Jensen, Ken
Mudford, John Anderson, John Hempleman,
Dean Hollier, Rod Coleman, Bob Coleman,
Henry Moller, Hugh Anderson, Ginger Molloy,
Ray Laurent, Noel McCutcheon, Dixie Dean,
Charlie Goldberg, Len Perry, Harry Lowe,
Paul Fahey, George Begg, Bill Holmes, John
Farnsworth, John Nelson, and Andy Martin.
The list of entrants also included Bill Buckley
riding a 1949 Vincent Rapide, and Ken
McIntosh on a 1949 Egli Vincent.
